When it comes to travelling with kids it can be tiring and stressful but we can’t forget that with a little planning it can actually be fun. The key to planning a holiday is in the list. Write lists in advance including separate lists for luggage, hand luggage, toiletries, medicines, toys and games.
Ensure you have your route well planned including: airport/ferry port facilities, service stations and stop over points.
Plan your luggage in advance, decide on your luggage, what you are packing and try to keep hand luggage to a minimum.
Organise the kids hand luggage and ensure that they have some things to entertain them as well as a snack and drink to keep energy levels up. Pictures to colour in or hand held consoles can be good. Audio books are great and can be played in the car. You can also download MP3 versions of the BBC kids radio shows for free from the bbc website. Try not to let them play with everything within the first 5 mins or they will be bored within the hour.
If you are travelling abroad it may be warm on arrival so ensure the kids are wearing layered clothes that they can remove when you get there.
If you are travelling at night with younger children a small blanket can be handy.
Don’t forget to check you have good travel insurance that covers all the family. If you are travelling within Europe remember to get an E11 European health card. The EHIC can be used to cover any necessary medical treatment due to either an accident or illness within the European Economic Area (EEA). The card entitles the holder to state-provided medical treatment within the country they are visiting and the service provided will be the same as received by a person covered by the country's 'insured' medical scheme. Plan your medicine kit well and ensure that you remember any everyday medicines that you or the family require as well as the general items.
Whether you are travelling abroad or staying closer to home, good quality, high factor sun protection lotion is important. Hats and a sun cabana for the beach are a good investment.
When travelling by plane, you should check in advance with the airline about their policy on travel cots and buggies/prams.
If you are flying, lollipops can be handy during take off and landing as the sucking motion will help with ears popping.
If you are renting a car, ensure that they will have the correct child seats for your children. Most good car rental companies will allow you to book these in advance.
Childrens ID bracelets can be handy if you are going to be in crowded places.
